Roof It Forward - Is An Extended Warranty For Your Roof Worth The Investment?

September 30, 2022

Appliances and technology come with warranties, and so do roofing systems. While there is an initial warranty provided by the contractor and/or manufacturer, you could also opt to purchase an extended warranty. If your roof breaks down and becomes damaged during the warranty period, your repair costs can be covered by the warranty. But is an extended warranty for your roof worth the investment?

There are three different types of warranties for roofs:

- Standard product limited warranty that is provided by the manufacturer to cover defected materials.

- Workmanship warranties that the roofing contractor offers themselves to cover the quality of their work.

- System warranty, also known as an extended warranty, has more comprehensive coverage and a longer timeframe than standard and workmanship warranties.

Extended warranties offer better coverage than standard warranties. This warranty can cover the cost of a roof replacement, including labor and materials. The timeframe of an extended warranty can range from 50 years to lifetime coverage, while standard coverage lasts around 10 years. There can be coverage on both materials and craftsmanship on your extended warranty.

There is an additional cost for extended warranties that are based on the square footage of the home. The extended warranty has to be purchased through your roofing contractor that installed the product, which they must be certified by the manufacturer to install.

To purchase an extended warranty, there are several requirements:

- Your roof must be installed by a roofing contractor that is certified by the manufacturer.

- Your roof system must meet several qualifying components to qualify as a roofing system. These components are set by the manufacturer of the roofing materials.

- Your roof must be installed over a ventilated deck that covers the whole structure.

While there is the additional cost of purchasing an extended warranty, the investment is worth it. Roofing repairs can be costly, so to be able to cover that upfront with an extended warranty is the way to go. You can also have peace of mind that if there are any issues with your roof, you'll have coverage on both the materials and workmanship.

Roof It Forward offers two types of extended coverage, preferred protection and platinum protection for Owens Corning Roofing.
